Job Title: Principal Engineer

Overview/Summary

Perform duties involving maintenance and repair of the components of unmanned aerial systems, to include unmanned aerial vehicles and ground control stations. Applies understanding of the function of data links or the communication / guidance system between vehicle and satellites (line of sight) and a basic understanding of computer networks and their functionally within UAS to perform all maintenance and repair functions.

 

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Define, develop, and lead the integration of new communications and networking payloads into UAS.
  • Develops innovative but practical solutions to advanced technical problems in engineering.
  • Assist with project pre-planning
  • Maintain, calibrate and repair airborne systems
  • Assist in monitoring the quality of collected data
  • Routine maintenance and troubleshooting of in-flight equipment
  • Participate in quality management, by working to document processes and procedures, plus offering recommendations on improvement opportunities
  • Identify new airborne network/communications payload concepts that improve mission capabilities for communications and networking, such as new communications interoperability / gateway capabilities, range extension or relay capabilities, or new links or protocols to service new users from airborne platforms.
  • Addresses complex and difficult technical issues requiring novel and highly creative approaches drawing on advanced engineering concepts.
  • Responsible for maintenance and repair of all components of unmanned aerial systems to comply with the test site safety program.
  • Ensure that standardization and safety practices regarding maintenance and repair of the components of unmanned aerial systems are being followed.
  • Reviewing technical reports, prepare and review technical presentations, and manage multiple technical tasks for our customer.
  • Manage/coordinate cyber and security challenges related to payload and systems integration certifications and authorization(s) to operate.
  • Conducting periodic management reviews, updating superiors for program status and issues, and recommending courses of action for the program.
  • May assume technical and engineering responsibility of the success of an identifiable project.

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

  • BS or equivalent experience
  • Experience with UAS operations and programming
  • The successful candidate must be a self-starter, able to handle multiple simultaneous tasks, and excel at communication and relationship-building.
  • Must have strong problem-solving and communication skills (both written & oral).
  • Excellent proficiency with Windows-based computer systems and networks is mandatory
  • Working level knowledge and experience in IP networking.
  • Ability to manage personal workload, vendors, and deliverables, to meet aggressive project timelines
  • Strong work ethic and team player

 

Certifications, Licenses and Additional Requirements

 

  • Travel within the region and/or throughout the country is required
  • Must be able to obtain a Remote Pilot Certification from the FAA
  • May be required to obtain a passport for occasional out of country deployment
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
  • Must pass an extensive background check and/or drug screening tests
